Our posts have recently been almost non-existent, so hello again and thanks for stopping in. Since the global outlook concerning textiles was expected to be quagmired in lengthy political maneauverings, we decided to give the situation the necessary time to develop beyond the "clamp down" on the importation of Chinese textiles in America and abroad, i.e. the European Union. The EU should soon work out a temporary measure to at least appease retailers with respect to the holiday shopping season being right around the corner. The United States is currently in the middle of dialogue with China and has publicly suggested a possible CAFTA in the making. Tex-"tiles"? More LikeGlobal Dominos.

One could not have lived in the free world over the last 10 days without having heard of import quotas levied against specific Chinese textiles by the United States. During this time, 7 of China's most exported clothing items had a quota imposed. China countered this move with one of their own - imposing an export tariff on the very articles the U.S. placed quotas on, almost 4 times the export tariffs of other similar goods.

This is a shrewd move on the part of the Chinese government's trade ministry, because the United States can only levy tariffs and quotas on Chinese imports until the year 2008. Sounds like a long time, huh? We'll grant you that, however, the Chinese nation will only continue to become an uber-giant in the global textile market between now and then. When China became a member of the World Trade Organization, part of the deal (at the behest of the United States) was the ability to levy and impose such methods through 2008. China hopes that it can buy goodwill and a little less scrutiny through being "a team player" globally until that time ... then look for that last domino to fall.

While we really didn't expect the Bush administration's quotas to provide much bite, at least the Chinese trade ministry reported accurately to it's governmental overseers the reality of the U.S. decisions - the U.S. is their largest importer of textiles, not to mention goods overall, it makes virtually no sense at all to push the point when merely waiting will produce a similar result, albeit later than sooner.

At least the U.S. bought a little more time to figure out how to deal with the Chinese and Indian juggernauts that a "no quota system" has brought. During which time the american textile industry and cotton growers have a little extra time to "grab a better hold" or "gain better footing" to weather the storm that looms.

Translation?? Buy american made products. It helps create jobs for americans and it helps keep those jobs in America, but that is only the first step. The United States has to become self-sufficient again, from the raw materials needed, to the production of the finished product. This would make us stronger both at home and abroad.

The WTO recently ruled that United States cotton subsidies are illegal. This ruling was on the appeal the United States had filed. This could and will most likely have far reaching effects across many agricultural subsidy programs.

Spring Is Around The Corner

Once you've shaken off the last shivers of winter, you'll want to open the windows, capture all of those dust bunnies and give the 'old home' the once over. Organize the clutter and put away the trappings of winter.

With that done, more than likely, you'll start thinking - "I want to spruce up this bedroom or that living space. I don't know what, just something different."

Sheet sets and matching comforters are a great way to give the bedroom the once over without setting out to spackle and paint! Pick a bright or warm solid and you've just transformed the whole room. Want a little more? Add a matching dust ruffle, or bed skirt. Even more?? Choose a rich print instead and accessorize with a couple of throw pillows or even a throw blanket. Mix and match to create the feel and "flavor" you're looking to achieve. Another idea along the same lines - think quilt. A 100% cotton quilt is perfect for the spring and summer months.

Pillowcases included with a choice of king and standard sizes.

Gina Franklin, from California, has received the Autumn Flowers Quilt, which was (it was discontinued minutes before this posting) from Kozy Komfort by Karen's Patchwork with Lace & Embroidery Quilts. Congratulations Gina!

These quilts are a bit more labor intensive in construction. Each features embroidery with some including lace work within. Most are made with a poly/cotton shell and polyester batting. These quilts are definitely made to be warm! A notch above a "starter quilt" and perfect for guest rooms, gifts, dorms and young couples where ease of care is desired.

Global Beginnings

This is the kind of beginning that affects every man, woman and child on our tiny planet. It's the beginning of a global textile trade with no quotas.

What does that mean? It means that 'a consumer' can buy as much as he or she wants from anyone, anywhere. "Consumer" in this case means "large purchaser," like a corporation or other similar entity.

The possibility is now heightened for emerging textile producers to get trampled in the global marketplace, while those that have become powerhouses might only get stronger, i.e., China & India (two of the biggest standing to gain further ground). Other emerging producers could gain ground simply because of being within geographic proximity to the largest players.

While many committees have been formed and many studies have been conducted, most of the ramifications in their totality, are merely unproven theories or surmisings. For example, some opponents of the "no quota" system have claimed that as many as 30 million+ jobs could be lost, or at the very least redistributed.

In essence, it doesn't matter in what country or on what continent or even what political system you happen to live - for better or worse - this will affect you.

Here in the United States of America, we could see further "outsourcing" by major corporations to those portions of the world with a mixture of the cheapest labor, highest volume production runs and reasonable quality assurance. Remember when the last wave of textile jobs were lost? This could be worse. Compounding this problem is the eventual WTO ruling on U.S. Cotton Subsidies. If the U.S. is forced to reduce the millions given out to cotton growers - lookout - a major market shift could occur.

Again, we're not experts, but we "call 'em as we see 'em" and this looks a little volatile for many. Do your own reading and decide for yourself. By the way, the "no quota" system began at 12:00:01 A.M., January 1, 2005.

Only time will tell.

Theresa Schrader, from New York, has received the Nature's Life Quilt, which was (it was discontinued minutes before this posting) from Kozy Komfort by Karen's Patchwork with Polyester Batting quilt grouping. Congratulations Theresa!

The quilts available within this grouping are beautiful, practical and affordable. They are primarily a poly/cotton shell with polyester batting. Definitely constructed to keep you warm!

Most feature traditional patterns including log cabin, wedding rings and stars. Think teens, dorms, young couples and ease of care. All are machine washable and should remain durable year after year without the fear of ruining an heirloom. Definitely a very nice "starter quilt" that will meet the needs of most and it makes a wonderful all purpose gift for just about anyone.
